For what it's worth

If you call it a blog I'll punch you.

Our Sweet Cannons
high atop our stone towers

I was recently speaking with someone and he said something that struck me as profound.  Now... I've been struck by many things like that one time I threw a brick up in the air and ran straight into it's downward trajectory, so take it for what it's worth.  He was telling me how he typically responds when others either don't or wont imitate Christ in conversation to the best of his/her ability.  He told me that he's battling his typical response of going up in his tower and shooting at them with his sweet cannons.

He elaborated a bit on his offense of choice.  As I'm sure you can imagine the ammunition could be varying sorts of iron, lead, and anything else sitting around the tower worth hurling towards the enemy.  That's the nice thing about cannons... if you can fit it in the cannon, you can shoot it.  If you cant - find a bigger cannon.  What caught my attention most here was not the hurt, anger, hate, etc that's spewed from the cannons, but moreover the nature of our sweet cannons themselves.  Think about it... a cannon, of itself, is not a bad thing.  We need cannons to fend of enemies.  Now... whether we choose the right target as our enemy - another story.  God would not have us defenseless against our many enemies.

First of all, these cannons are elevated atop the tower.  They are esteemed things.  We treasure them.  Secondly, what projects our forceful thought except those places that we have strength?  Example:  How can I belittle you in your biblical knowledge unless I have a strong knowledge and background in biblical knowledge?  These cannons are our skills, our gifts, our talents, and blessings that we've received.  We use the very strengths God has given us to defend His holy people and we load them with anger and hurt and envy and strife and we light the fuse.  God help anyone in the way.

God, help us to see that our sweet cannons atop our towers should only be facing outside the city walls.  Help us to close the portholes that face inward and show us that despite how big or shiny some of our sweet cannons might be, they have one purpose and that is to fend off the enemy at the gate.
